When Boy and I went to Ireland last summer, we had to look hard to find restaurants which served Irish food (we gave up on a couple of evenings, it was that scarce). Towards the end of our trip, we had a storytelling meal where we finally learned why this was. Our storyteller tells us that the Irish consider all Irish food to be peasant food, and they don't like to eat it because it reminds them of when they (as a people) were poor.
I think this is kind of sad, for two reasons. One, the Irish food we ate there was truly delicious, filling, and deserving of being served anywhere. And two, if that attitude persists too long, they could lose their food heritage. That would be tragic.
