Writer's Block: Venting
Rafferty the rescued puppy thinks the best place in the whole world to be is right between my feet or under them if I'm walking. I've accidentally stepped on him, kicked him, and tripped over him every time I move around - and since I take him to work with me, that's a lot of stepping, kicking, and tripping.
In fact, Rafferty is a whole raft of annoyances. Most I can weather through because he is a puppy. But he has no sense of edges, so he's always falling off of things. Even shallow things like the throw rug. I'm not quite sure how he manages to fall off of something as flat as a rug lying on the floor, but he manages. He has no bite sense, either, and he consistently bites too hard. He drew blood on Itzl, who is far too gentle to properly scold the puppy. Shika would have done it in a heartbeat. And he doesn't mind me on this. I've got him 90% potty trained, and 80% trained to come on command and 70% trained to both sit and stay, but I can't convince him that he plays too rough. He needs an older, bigger dog to smack him around, I guess.
Fortunately, his new owner has an older, bigger dog. Once she gets him, maybe she'll have better luck with his biting issues. I'd pursue it harder if I was keeping him, but since he will leave when he's about 8 weeks old, I think I've done enough basic training for him.
He's weaned to puppy food - moist, gooshy, puppy food, but not the real thing. He should be willing to eat crunchy food within the week. One final week to make sure he's good on his food and he should be ready for his new mom.
And this makes all the annoyances of this week acceptable.
