BTW, I did take the time to read through the constitution. The mandatory voting thing is an interesting concept. I believe they have that in Australia, or am I misremembering?

I think so. Australia was one of our sources for creating the Constitution. The folks who helped put it together wanted to make sure that while I had plenty of responsibility and power, it was balanced by the responsibility and power of the citizens. We started writing it just before 9/11 and finished it 2 years later. We think that citizenship entails certain obligations. A lot that's in the Constitution isn't really in effect as we a) don't have enough citizens to put them in place and b)lack a treasury to pay for them and c)lack a physical country in which to carry them out and d) lack anything resembling a national economy/products/exports and e) lack a lot of negotiating power because we lack all the rest. But it's an ideal towards which we want to strive and dream about bringing into some degree of reality.
