Itzl went to the vet today for a check-up on his ear.

The vet says there's still a hole in his ear drum, a very visible hole, but no infection.

He goes back again 2 more weeks, and once the hole is healed up, he has an appointment with a canine audiologist to see if he has any hearing loss.

So far, except that he decided he was terrified of the vet, he hasn't had a noticeable loss of ability in alerting on sounds.

By the end of the vet visit, he was much more relaxed. A couple of visits where he doesn't get stuck with needles, locked in cages, and separated from me, and he'll be calm about the vet again.

He was so funny. Itzl refused to look at the vet, which made it difficult for the vet to check his tonsils. I'd tell Itzl to open his mouth, and he would, facing me with his back to the vet. I finally held up a mirror and that's how the vet saw what she needed to see.

The vet could check his ears without any trouble though because she didn't need Itzl to face her for that.

The closest canine audiologist is in Ohio and then after that in Connecticut, so we have a road trip in the near future, and where we go depends upon who's accepting appointments.

"Itl Update" -- might want to correct that first word.

Sending good thoughts.

Poor baby. *huggles Itzl*

I'm so glad he wasn't hurt too badly. And you too.

Thank you. He's doing so much better, but his injury has restricted our travel a lot - no altitude changes for him until his eardrum finishes healing, which means no trips to Tulsa or Texas for now.

If Central Indiana (about 30 miles west of Indianapolis itself) would be a convenient overnight point on that road trip, I can introduce you to Bill and Brenda Sutton, who have a big house with lots of spare bedrooms and LOVE to have visitors.

That would be nice. I can make it to Ohio in a day, but not there and back - and if we end up going to Connecticut, well.

I don't know yet when that will be because Itzl apparently had a huge hole in his eardrum and there's still a sizable hole there now. We can't travel through any mountains or change in elevations until he heals so he doesn't damage his ear again.

Canine audiology is not a very common veterinary field, there aren't any actual vet courses in it.

Roj on the indefinite timing.
That will give me time to brief Bill and Brenda on the situation.
They are about to be off to the British Filk Con; I don't know how long they'll be in the UK before-and-after that.

Brenda is [livejournal.com profile] lady_at and Bill is [livejournal.com profile] bedlamhouse, by the way.

Let us know when you are traveling. We're in the UK this week, but after that we'd be happy to put you two up for a night.

Cheers,
Brenda

Thank you! It all depends on how quickly Itzl heals - the damage to his ear was much worse than they initially thought. If he doesn't get any infection, he should be healed in 3 - 4 weeks, and then after that, it's a matter of securing an appointment with the canine audiologist.

Enjoy the trip and the filking!

I am glad to hear that he's doing better! I hope his recovery continues quickly.
