Friends and Movies

My daughter and I were discussing movies and how we couldn't be friends with people who didn't like certain movies, a litmus test for becoming friends, as it were.

What we decided was that here were a few key movies that they had to like in order to be compatible, and certain movies they had to get (they didn't have to like them, just had to understand them) or they wouldn't be smart enough to be comfortable being our friends, and a few others that they had to find funny or they wouldn't understand our sense of humor.

So, folks who like and enjoy the following movies will probably be compatible with me:
Fantasia
Labyrinth
Stranger Than Fiction
Stardust
Enchanted
Classic Trek
Star Wars (The Phantom Menace)
Winterhawk
Dreamkeeper
Quidam
Addams Family TV series

Movies my friends need to understand in order to understand me:
Quills
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Wicker Man
Chocolat
Dead Poet Society
Toys
She-Devil
Willard
Pan's Labyrinth
Allegria
Boston legal TV Series

And to sync with my sense of humor they have to find these movies funny:
Spaceballs
Ice Pirates
The Pirate Movie
Shaun of the Dead
Wagons East
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Reckless Kelly
Bernard and the Genie
Court Jester
Victor/Victoria
Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Dead Like Me TV Series

I suppose this can also be done with music, books, comics, and fine art pieces. For example, if you can't understand the Rhodan sculptures, we probably won't connect very well on some topics.

So, what about you guys? What movies do you think would be markers to indicate if someone would be a compatible friend, what movies, music, books, or comics? I chose 10 (plus a TV series) for each category, but you can choose less or more.

I think we connect :-)

Srsly, my CTO and I used Monty Python as a litmus test. Anyone who didn't get a well known random Python quote was probably not the best person to work with us 8+ hours a day ...

I figure most folks who've been reading me as long as you have would be mostly compatible. Pity we're most of a continent apart.

I've seen and liked a good bit of those movies. It looks like we'd get along if we were shut up together for a week...

heee.

Sounds good to me. I'm not intimately familiar with ALL the listed things, but certainly enough of them to (hopefully) qualify.

Spaceballs...

Raspberry jam, anyone?

Yep, we'd definitely get along. But I already knew that!

My only objection to Quills is that they chicken out at the end. Nothing irritates me more than a brilliant movie that completely fails to stick the landing. But other than that, yeah, we'd get along.

I very VERY rarely come across another fan of my favorite movie... even if I have people watch it with me, they are usually kind of indifferent or give a mere, "wow, that was weird." Which blows my mind.

So obviously... people don't have to get my movies to get me.

It's gorgeous and amazing, and the ending infuriates me. The necrophilia should have really happened, and the Marquis should have been completely unrepentant.

But I am a believer in following the passion no matter how dangerous.

So, what are your favorite movies?

[identity profile] laughterdance.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite movie - ever - is Harold and Maude. I have it and show it off, but almost no one seems to like it. Which is a shame, now that you make me think of it, because understanding this movie means you understand not only a good chunk of my outlook and philosophy on life but also my sense of humor AND get to hear my favorite musician do the soundtrack. I've already worn out two VHS copies of this and am now on a DVD (hooray, much sturdier).

I also adore the 1967 Bedazzled (not the new one) and Brewster McCloud - which again just about no one has seen; I guess because they are small cult classics that came out before most of my friends were born.

Once you get past those, I do have more in common with my peers - Tim Burton movies and other dark fantasies (among these, MirrorMask is my favorite), science fictions (I love Enemy Mine, Frequency, Dude, Where's My Car?), dance movies, and occassional "serious" movies thrown in (like Family Man with Nicolas Cage or Amistad - those movies are thought-provoking and elegant, which I always appreciate)

Maybe I should make a movie post, just for kicks.

I like Harold and Maud and the old Bedazzled. I don't recall Brewster McCloud. We've seen so many movies over the years, we've found enough common points.

Yes, you should do a movie post.

Oops. Didn't mean to reply to you specifically. Oops.

Oh. Okay. Thought it was about Quills, so responded. No big deal.

Yeah, the ending blew, but the rest of the movie is brilliant and provocative and awe-inspiring. It's not a movie I can bear watching often, but, yeah, it defines an important part of me.
