No idea is ever lost.

The story idea I had that got waylaid by traffic came back to me. This time I was in a position to write it down.

The world building will take some work - it's a city superimposed on a galaxy. It's a 2 level city - on the "street" level, the houses, businesses, and all are widely separated and located casually and almost indistinguishably among the cities of everyday life. On the upper level, particular places are all interconnected as if they were a single city instead of individual places scattered all across a galaxy. Each place can access either the street level location or the "city" level - as you can tell, it's a new idea that hasn't gotten its term together yet. The places don't change location in hte "city" level, and people can travel from place to place as easily there as on the "street" level. Neighbors on the "city" level might not even be on the same planet on the "street" level.

I even have a tolerable plot. It involves the gnomes that invaded my colony planet in Juxtaposies - their back story and history gets revealed during a search for the new gnome "king". King is used loosely because it's neither a royal position - other than a royal pain - nor does the gnome have to be male, which is good considering the gnomes have four genders. Search is also used loosely, because it's not a quest type story. Gnomes don't do quests. Dwarves might, but gnomes tend to be homebodies. They're the ones who created the "city" so they could have all the advantages of both being home and traveling.

I suppose I did so much research on gnomes for Juxtaposie that this story just simmered away until it emerged on the drive. Because it was so long in appearing, this story wasn't going to be easily forgotten.
