Soy Leaves Us in the Cold

Snow in the Garden

McDonald's will remain on the boycott list as they are adding even more soy to their foods. They are joined by a lengthy list of other restaurants who hide soy in their foods. Many of these restaurants, surprisingly, are unaware that their food has soy in it - even though soy is among the top 10 allergens and is required to be listed as an ingredient in all foods. It's getting so it's not safe to eat anything we haven't prepared ourselves.

It doesn't have to be listed in non-food products, despite a large number of people with contact soy allergies. So manufacturers are sliding soy into ink (preventing the use of photocopiers and some printer ink cartridges and some pens - and leading to having to cancel some magazine subscriptions because they print with soy), soap, hand lotions, aerosol sprays of various sorts, perfumes, deodorants, mascara, lipsticks and lip balms, nail polish, candles, and they're even making fabric out of soy. The other day, I saw sandals made of soy being advertised.

We may have to abdicate from society altogether to avoid the soy invasion; become Luddites against my desire.

I am really feeling that lately. I've been doing this elimination diet because I've reacted in testing to a large list of foodstuffs and it has been nearly impossible to even find BREAD that doesn't include soy. I'm reduced to buying organic graham crackers (for $3.49 a bag instead of 99 cents a box) and preparing all of my own food from scratch.

Perhaps try a local bakery instead? Our local supermarket actually carries the bread from a local italian place. No preservatives or weirdness in it.

I'm doing a lot of shopping at Whole Foods, unfortunately -- which is KILLING my food budget but which seems to be the only place I can find food that doesn't violate the Avoid These Foods list of allergens that my doctor gave me. I'll see if I can seek out a local bakery. Orlando is, unfortunately, not very well populated with establishments of that sort. There's a lot of big business here. Or small businesses that cater to a wealthy crowd.

Ah... yah... Orlando does seem to be that way. :/ (I've family in that area.)

Perhaps it's time to invest in a bread machine. (I haven't the time to make bread every week myself.)

I am considering a bread machine. My mom has one that she doesn't use and I might just have to abscond with it on our next visit.

Really... I haven't met a store-bought bread yet that compares with homemade.

Hell, soap is the only thing I will use soy oil in!! Even then, I prefer olive, coconut, castor, sunflower, safflower, lard, palm, palm kernel, and grape seed oils.

I knew about the ingestion allergies to soy, but not the contact ones. Now I have to be careful with soy and well as peanut oil in my homemade soap.

Argggh!

Heh, soy is also an inhalation allergy - respiratory problems. With soy being put into gasoline now, a lot of people who aren't allergic to soy in other ways are learning they have inhalation allergy to soy by manifesting a persisten cough that gets traced to soy fumes.

Life in America truly sucks if you're allergic to soy.

My friend [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] is very allergic to soy- even inhaling it messes him up. And it's in practically everything.

I drink soy milk and use soy sauce and other Asian soy products. But that's the soy I know about. I rarely eat bread, and will start making my own, because High Fructose Corn Syrup is a worse irritant for me- it gives me hellacious heartburn. I cannot drink sodas, eat candy, or any other foods with high amounts of HFCS in them. And I wonder if this isn't the reason why we're having such an epidemic of heartburn and gastric problems.

*works on encouraging more virulent strains of soybean rust*

*innocent whistling*

Why yes, I do believe in fighting anaphylaxis with biochemical warfare, why do you ask? ;)

Soy is the new miracle plant, unfortunately for the very many allergic. I've seen advertising and even thought out articles on how soy will save the world. You know. Like they used to say that hemp would save the world, five years ago. Now hemp is retiring and has hired soy.

I had no idea how much food wrapping contained latex, either. Considering the number of people who have latex allergies, and the fact that the number keeps growing, why the heck are more and more companies using latex in their wrappers?

Because it's cheap! And they don't have to disclose what touches the food, just what's in it!

Bah. Grr. Argh.
